Fashion Nation: What Retailers Know About Us

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article about the amount of information retailers and banks collect about our shopping habits. From the preferred colors in specific areas (Southerners bought more white, green, and pink than other regions' residents), to preferred brands (Upper West Side residents' favorite is Gap while residents across town on the Upper East Side favor flashier, more expensive apparel, such as Jimmy Choo shoes), retailers collect a lot of information about us.

Banks also tally up trends based on our card purchases. These trends are then sold to third party companies who use it to improve retailers' marketing campaigns. (The American Express representative quoted in the article claimed that they don't sell information about individuals; only collected trends).
